Belief in the heart does not benefit without the action of the limbs, for actions are a part of faith, and faith is not correct or upright without them. These are the statements of some scholars regarding the status of the actions of the limbs in faith:
Al-Hasan al-Basree said, “Faith is a statement, and there is no statement without action, and there is no statement and action without an intention, and there is no statement, action, and intention except with the Sunnah.” [776] Ibn Battah in Al-Ibaanah Al-Kubraa, (2/ 803), and Al-Lalka’i in Sharh Usool ‘Itiqaad Ahl as-Sunnah, (1/63).
Sufyaan ibn Uyaynah states, “They say, ‘Faith is a statement,’ while we say: ‘Faith is a statement and an action.’” [777] As-Sunnah, by Abdullah bin Ahmad (1/347).
Ibn Taymiyyah states, “Faith according to Ahl as-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah is a statement and a deed, as indicated by the Book and the Sunnah, and the predecessors unanimously agreed upon it, and on what is established in its place. So, statement signifies the affirmation in the Messenger, and action is the affirmation the statement. When the servant is completely devoid of action, he is not a believer.” [778] Sharh al-‘Umdah, (2/86).
Al-Albaanee states, “Faith without action is useless; Allah, when He mentions faith, He mentions it in conjunction with good deeds, because we cannot imagine faith without a good deed, unless we imagine it as a fantasy.” [779] Sharh al-Adab al-Mufrad - Sixth Tape - First Side.
