Section II: Makruh Fasting
Firstly: Fasting daily [821] Dahr is time, so to fast for the dahr is to always be fasting excepting the prohibited days.
It is makruh to fast daily. This is the position of the Hanafis, a position among Malikis, a position among Shafi`is, the position of some of the Hanbalis, and the choice of al-Shawkani.
Secondly: Fasting `Arafah for the pilgrim
It is makruh for the pilgrim to fast on the day of `Arafah. This is the position of the majority: Malikis, Shafi`is, and Hanbalis.
Thirdly: Singling out Friday
It is makruh to single out Friday for fasting except if it matches a previous, valid habit, like the one who fasts a day and breaks his fast for a day. This is the position of the Shafi`is, Hanbalis, some Hanafis, and the position of some of the Salaf. It is also the choice Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Shawkani, and al-Shinqiti.
Fourthly: Fasting on a Saturday
It is permissible to fast on Saturday by itself for a reason, or if it matches the habit of the person. It is also permissible to fast it along with another day before or after it. This is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence. [822] For them it is makruh to fast it by itself without a reason, while there are scholars – like Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Hajar, and others – who viewed it as unconditionally permissible to fast.
Fifthly: Singling out the month of Rajab with fasting
It is makruh to single out the month of Rajab for fasting. This is explicitly mentioned by the jurists of the Malikis, Hanbalis, and it is the choice of al-Shawkani.
