Section V: Conditions of Walking between Safa and Marwah
Firstly: Covering the enter distance between Safa and Marwah
It is a condition that one cover the entire distance between Safa and Marwah with every round. If one does not cover the entire distance, then their act is invalid. This is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence.
Secondly: Starting with Safa and ending with Marwah
It is a condition that one begin with Safa and end with Marwah until one completes seven rounds. If one begins with Marwah, that round does not count. This is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence. This is also the position of a group of the Salaf.
Thirdly: Seven rounds
A condition of walking between Safa and Marwah is that one complete seven rounds: going from Safa to Marwah is one and returning from Marwah to Safa is another. This is the position of the majority: the Malikis, Shafi`is, and Hanbalis. It is also the position of the Zahiri school.
Fourthly: Completion of circumambulation
Scholars have differed whether completing circumambulation is a condition for walking between Safa and Marwah. Two positions are strongest:
The first position: A condition for the validity of walking between Safa and Marwah is that it occur after circumambulation. This is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence. [1023] Malikis also predicate that walking between Safa and Marwah must follow on obligatory performance of circumambulation. It is only valid after the Arrival Circumambulation according to them because they hold it to be wajib.
The second position: It is not a condition for the validity of walking between Safa and Marwah that it follow circumambulation. This is the position of the Zahiri school, one narration from Ahmad, and the position of some of the Salaf. This is the position of choice of Ibn Baz and Ibn `Uthaymin.
Fifthly: Continuity between rounds
Scholars are of two positions regarding whether all rounds of walking between Safa and Marwah must be performed immediately after each other:
The first position: It is not a condition that all rounds be performed immediately after one other. This is the position of the Hanafi and Shafi`i schools and one narration from Ahmad. This is the chosen position of Ibn Qudamah and Ibn Baz.
The second position: It is a condition that all rounds be performed immediately after one another. This is the position of the Maliki and Hanbali schools. This is the chosen position of Ibn `Uthaymin.
Interrupting walking between Safa and Marwah when prayer starts
If prayer starts while one is walking between Safa and Marwah, one interrupts their walking and prays, then completes the remaining rounds. This is the position of the majority: the Hanafis, Shafi`is, and Hanbalis. It is the position of the majority of scholars.
