Section 2: That which the wife mourning for her deceased husband should avoid <span class="tip"> [238] Unfortunately, some women today take the mourning for their husbands lightly i.e., they would go out of their houses and adorn themselves or leave the house for unnecessary purposes or even to do forbidden things, such as it happens in some wedding parties! On the other hand, some women go to the other extremes in their mourning and do things that Allah has not prescribed like refraining from eating some types of permissible food, neglect their personal hygiene, and so on! </span>

Wearing clothes dyed with safflower [239] Safflower clothes are clothes dyed with safflower, which is a summer plant from which a red dye is extracted to dye silk and the like. and saffron [240] Saffron clothes are clothes dyed with Saffron. and clothes dyed for adornment purposes: The four Madhabs hold the view that it is forbidden for a wife mourning for her deceased husband to wear clothes dyed with safflower and saffron.
2. Wearing perfumes and adornments: The scholars are in consensus that wearing perfumes and adornments is not allowed for the wife mourning for her husband. This consensus has been transmitted by Ibn al-Munthir, Ibn Qudaamah, al-Aynee, and al-Shawkaanee.
3. Adorning herself with jewellery: The four Madhabs agree that it is forbidden for a wife mourning her husband to wear jewellery. It is the view of most people of knowledge.
4. Applying kohl: The four Madhabs [241] Hanafi Madhab stipulates that using kohl is permissible if there is an excuse, such as using for medical purposes. As for the Maliki Madhab, it is permissible if it is used for necessary purposes, and so in this case the wife can apply kohl at night and remove it during the day. The Shafi’i and Hanbali Madhabs are of the view that it is permissible for her to apply kohl if it is for a necessary purpose, such as medication, thus, in this case, the wife can apply kohl at night and remove it during the day. agree that it is forbidden for the wife mourning for her deceased husband to apply kohl for the purpose of adornment.
5. Pigmentation with henna: The four Madhabs agree that it is forbidden for a wife mourning her husband to pigment with henna.
