Section 2: Naming [322] This issue is discussed in detail in the Book of Aqeeqah.

First: Naming the child a good name
One of the essential rights of children over their parents is to give them good names, such as names that are added to the Name of Allah like Abdullah, Abdulrahman, etc.
Second: Ugly names and names that entail praising the self
1- Ugly names [323] The Arabs in old times used to pay no attention to the names of their children to the extent that they would be proud of naming their children with names that entail an ugly meaning. Islam disciplined them and ordered them to choose good names and forbade them from choosing bad and ugly names and names that are not permitted in Islam. However, unfortunately, we find some Muslims today - in the disbelievers-dominated age - tend to use foreign names that are alien to our culture and language!
The four Madhabs agree that it is disliked for the parents to give children names that entail ugly meanings.
2- Self-praising Names
The four Madhabs agree that it is disliked for the parents to give their children names that entail praising the self.
Third: Names that are prohibited to use
- Names that establish slavery to other than Allah
It is forbidden for parents to name their children a name that entails their slavery to other than Allah, such as Abd al-Kaaba (the slave of the Ka’bah), Abd al-Nabi (the slave of the Prophet), Abd al-Rasool (the slave of the Messenger), or Abd al-Hussain (the slave of al-Hussain). This is agreed on by the agreement of all scholars, as transmitted by Ibn Hazm.
