Section 1: Definition of Clothes, Importance of Clothes, and Wisdom behind Prescribing Clothes
First topic: Definition of clothes
Clothes are a covering designed to be worn on a person's body like garments and chemise. [1] Mu’jam Maqaayees Al Lughah by Ibn Faaris (5/230); Lisaan Al-‘Arab Dictionary by Ibn Manthoor (6/202); Al Mu’jam Al Waseet (2/813)
Second topic: Importance of clothes in Islam and the wisdom behind prescribing it
First requirement: Importance of clothes in Islam
Islam gives too much importance to clothing, which can be noted in the following highlights:
1- Clothes are from Allah’s favors and bounties that He has bestowed upon humans exclusively and by which He differentiates humans from animals. Allah, Most High, says, “O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment…” [2] Ibn Katheer says, “Allah states that it is from His favours upon us that He granted us clothes and feathers. The clothes mentioned in this Ayah refer to the type of clothes that are used to cover the private parts, which is a necessity, while the feather refers to the type of clothes used as adornment, which is deemed an accessory” Tafseer Ibn Katheer (3/399) (al-A`raf: 26)
2- Allah prohibits nakedness and describes it as an act of enticement and temptation. Allah, Most High, says, “O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing to show them their private parts...” (al-A`raf: 27)
Second requirement: Wisdom behind legislating clothes
1- Clothes cover the parts of the body that should be covered, which helps to protect chastity and the morality of society.
Allah, Most High, says, “O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best…” (al-A`raf: 26)
2- Clothes protect the human body from the heat and coldness of the weather.
Allah, Most High, says, “And Allah has made for you, from that which He has created, shadows [i.e., shade] and has made for you from the mountains, shelters and has made for you garments which protect you from the heat and garments [i.e., coats of mail] which protect you from your [enemy in] battle. Thus, does He complete His favour upon you that you might submit [to Him]. But if they turn away, [O Muhammad] - then only upon you is [responsibility for] clear notification. They recognize the favour of Allah; then they deny it. And most of them are disbelievers.” (an-Nahl: 81-83) The part “garments” in the Ayah refers to the different kinds of dresses and clothes. [3] Tafseer Al-Sadee (p. 445)
3- Clothes are a means to manifest our gratitude and Allah’s grace upon us
Allah is Beautiful, and He loves beauty. One of the forms of beauty that Allah loves is seeing us wearing clothes decently. He sent us the gift of garments and clothes to cover our body parts and enhance our outer beauty; and ordered us to observe piety to enhance their inner beauty. Allah, Most High, says in the Quran, “O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best…” (al-A`raf: 26) Allah likes to see His grace shown on His servants; outwardly by looking good and inwardly by being grateful for His blessings. [4] Al-Fawaa’id by Ibn Al Qayyim (p. 184)
Aboo Al-Ahwas narrated that his father had said, “I went to the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in a shabby garment. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) asked, ‘Do you have property?’ I answered, ‘Yes.’ The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, ‘What kind of property?’ I said, ‘Allah Has granted me camels, sheep, horses and slaves.’ The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Now that Allah Has granted you wealth, let Allah see the effect of His grace and generosity on you.’” [5] Reported by Aboo Daawood (4063), Al-Nasaa’ee (5224), and Musnad Ahmed (15928). The wording of this report is of Aboo Daawood. Al-Daarqutnee said, “It should have been recorded in Saheeh Muslim too” Al Ilzaamaat wal Tattabu’ (72). The report is declared authentic by Al-Albaanee in Saheeh Sunan Abee Daawood (4063), Al-Waad’ee in Al Saheeh Al Musnad (1109) who remarked that it is according to the conditions of Imam Muslim.
A person who eats permissible food and wears permissible clothes with the intention of showing the graces that Allah Has granted him and helping him to worship Allah should expect a reward from Allah for that. [6] See Majmoo’ Al-Fataawaa by Ibn Taymiyyah (22/138)
