Section IV: Rulings of the Junub
Firstly: What the junub is prohibited from prayer
Praying is haram for the junub, and it does not suffice him from fulfilling the obligation. Consensus has been quoted over this by: Ibn Rushd, al-Nawawi, Ibn Taymiyyah, and Ibn Al-Jawzy.
- Circumambulation:It is haram for one who is junub to circumambulate the Ka`bah, and this is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence.
- Remaining in the mosque:
It is haram for one who is junub to stay for a lengthy period within the mosque, and this is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence. [214] Hanbalis have excepted the junub who performs ablution, then such a person may remain in the mosque for a lengthy time.
- Passing through the mosque:
It is permissible for the junub to pass through the mosque. This is the position of the Shafi`is, Hanbalis, a group of the Salaf, it is also the choice of Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Baz, and Ibn `Uthaymin.
- Touching the mushaf:It is haram for the junub to touch the mushaf, and this is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence.
- Reciting the Qur'an:Scholars have differed over the ruling of reciting the Qur'an for the junub according to many views, the strongest of which are two:
The first: It is that it is haram for the junub to recite the Qur'an, and this is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence, and the majority of scholars hold this position.
The second: It is that it is permissible. This is the position of the Zahiris and some of the Salaf, and it is the choice of al-Bukhari, al-Tabari, Ibn al-Mundhir, and al-Shawkani.
- Immersing oneself in still water:It is makruh for the junub to immerse himself in still water.
[215] Like swimming pools in some households, and others. This is the position of the majority: Malikis, Shafi`is, and Hanbalis.
Secondly: What is mustahabb for the junub
It is mustahabb for the junub to perform ablution for eating, drinking, sleeping, and when going back to intercourse. [216] This has been discussed thoroughly in the chapter of ablution.
Thirdly: Ruling of the junub’s fast
Fasting is valid from the junub. Consensus has been quoted over this by Ibn al-`Arabi, al-Nawawi, and Ibn Hajar.
Fourthly: Body and sweat
The body and sweat of the junub are pure. Consensus has been quoted over the purity of the junub’s body by al-Nawawi and Ibn Taymiyyah, and consensus has been quoted over the purity of his sweat by Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn `Abd al-Barr, and al-Baghawi.
