- Dry ablution with dust:Scholars have differed over the ruling of performing dry ablution with other than dust [223] Consensus has been quoted over the permissibility of using dust generally by: Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Hazm, Ibn `Abd al-arr, Ibn Rushd, and Ibn Taymiyyah. according to two views:
The first: It is that it is wajib to use dust in dry ablution and it is not permissible to use other than it. This is the position of the Shafi`is, Hanbalis, a position among Malikis, and the position of Dawud al-Zahiri. It is also the choice of Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Hajar, and it is narrated by al-Nawawi as the position of the majority of jurists.
The second: It is that it is not wajib to use dust in dry ablution, and it is permissible to use anything upon the earth from it, like dust, sand, and minerals. This is the position of the Hanafis and Malikis. It is also the choice of al-Tabari, Ibn Hazm, Ibn Baz, al-Albani, and Ibn `Uthaymin.
- Ruling of wiping over the face and the two palms in dry ablution:
Wiping the face and the two palms in dry ablution is overall wajib. Consensus has been quoted over this by: Ibn Hazm, Ibn Qudamah, al-Nawawi, and Ibn Rajab.
- Method of wiping over the face and the two palms in dry ablution:
The person performing dry ablution strikes the earth’s surface once, then wipes over his face and palms once. This is the position of the Hanbalis and a group from the Salaf. It is also the choice of the majority of scholars of Hadith, Ibn al-Mundhir, al-Shawkani, al-Shinqiti, Ibn Baz, al-Albani, and Ibn `Uthaymin.
- Covering the whole face and palms:
The whole face and palms must be wiped in dry ablution. If a small part is left from the body parts of dry ablution, then this does not suffice, and this is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence, as well as the majority of scholars. Order in dry ablution
Order in dry ablution is wajib. [224] The face is wiped first then the palms. This is the position of the Shafi`is, a position among Malikis, a position among Hanbalis, and the choice of Ibn Baz and Ibn `Uthaymin.
- Continuity in dry ablution:Continuity in dry ablution is wajib.
[225] Some jurists give it the same time as between body parts in normal ablution. This is the position of the Malikis, a position among Hanbalis, and the choice of Ibn `Uthaymin.
Secondly: Sunan of dry ablution tasmiyah
Saying the basmalah is a sunnah before dry ablution according to the majority: Hanafis, Malikis, Shafi`is, and a position among Hanbalis.
- Blowing the hands after striking them:
It is a sunnah to lighten the dust [226] Some have described it nafd – clapping and shaking the hands – while others used nafkh – blowing onto the hands – and others gave a choice between them. Both have been transmitted in the sunnah. on the hands after striking the earth with them. This is the position of the Hanafis, Malikis, the old position of al-Shafi`i, a narration from Ahmad, and the position of a group from the Salaf. It is also the choice of Ibn Hazm, Ibn Baz, and Ibn `Uthaymin.
