Section 3: Recommended Actions of Marriage
1- Making the bride price (mahr) affordable:
It is recommended for the bride price to be little and refrain from exaggeration.
[45] It is unfortunate to see people today going extreme about it, asking the groom for a large amount of money just to flaunt and insisting on making it look like a competition. It is so much beyond the ability of most men such that those who agree to it, drowns in debts while those who are not married yet no longer consider the option of marriage because they cannot afford it, leaving all these females unmarried. This is the view of the majority of the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali scholars.
2. Delivering a sermon before conducting the marriage: The four Madhabs agree that it is recommended to give a speech before conducting the marriage contract.
3. Making supplications for the married couple: The majority of scholars, namely the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali Madhabs, hold the view that it is recommended for people to supplicate to Allah to bless the newly married couple.
4. Making supplication upon entering upon the wife: The majority of scholars, namely the Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali Madhabs, hold the view that it is recommended for the husband to supplicate to Allah upon entering his new wife.
