First: Maintenance for parents
The scholars are in consensus that children, who are financially able, are obliged to spend on their poor parents. The consensus is reported by Ibn al-Munthir, Ibn Hazm, Ibn Qudaamah, and al-Shawkaanee.
Second: Maintenance for grandparents no matter how far they ascend
The majority of scholars hold the view that it is obligatory to spend on grandparents who are financially in need, no matter how far the line of ascent reaches. This is agreed on by the Hanafi, Shafi’i, and Hanbali Madhabs.
