Section1: Definition of adornment and its rules
First topic: Definition of adornment
Adornment (Zeenah): [440] (Tahtheeb al-Lughah) by Al-Azharee (13/175), (Lisaan Al-‘Arab) by Ibn Manzoor (13/202). A comprehensive name for everything that is adorned and beautified with.
Second topic: General rules of adornment
First rule: That women should not imitate men, or vice versa.
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates, saying, “The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) cursed men who resemble/imitate women and women who imitate men.” [441] Narrated by Al-Bukhaaree (5885).
Second rule: That it should not imitate the unbelievers, the people of innovation, the immoral and the lowly among the people.
1. Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates saying that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated, “One who imitates other people is among them.” [442] It was narrated by Abu Dawood (4031), Ahmad (5114), and al-Bayhaqee in “Shu’ab al-Imaan” (1154). His chain of transmission was authenticated by al-Dhahabi in “Siyar Al-‘Alaam Al-Nubalaa” (15/509), Al-Iraqee in “Takhreej Al-Ihyaa” (1/359), and Ahmad Shaakir in “Musnad Ahmad” (15/509), and Ibn Hajar said In “Fath al-Baaree” (10/282): Thaabit, and the hadith was authenticated by Ibn Baaz in “Majmoo’ of Fatwas of Ibn Baaz” (4/358), and al-Albaanee in “Irwaa al-Ghaleel” (1269).
2. Also on his authority, narrating from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) who stated, “Be different from the polytheists, grow long beards, and trim moustaches.” [443] Narrated by Al-Bukhaaree (5892) and Muslim (259).
Third rule: That the adornment does not cause harm.
1. Allah Almighty stated, “And do not throw yourself into destruction with your own hands.” (al-Baqarah: 195)
The relevance:
It can be understood from the verse that whatever causes harm is forbidden. [444] (Tafseer Al-Uthaymeen: Al-Faatihah and Al-Baqarah) (2/390).
2. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “There is no harming someone and reciprocating [445] Al-Qaraafee said, “The second point: in establishing evidence for the prohibition of harm, wherein the relied upon evidence is his (Prophet’s) saying –(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)-: “There is no harming someone and reciprocating.” (Nafaais Al-Usool fee Sharh Al-Mahsuool) (9/3982). Al-Minaawee said, “And in it [this hadeeth], contains the prohibition of all types of harm except what is done with evidence, because the indefinite noun in the context of negation becomes general, and in it there is an omission, its real: no receiving [harm] or inflicting it; or there is no harming or mutually harming anyone in our religion, that is: it is not permissible except for a special reason.” (Fayd al-Qadeer) (6/431). harm.” [446] It was narrated by Al-Daarqutnee in “Al-Sunan” (4541), Al-Haakim in “Al-Mustadrak” (2345), and Al- Bayhaqee in “Al-Sunan Al-Kubraa” (11384) from the hadeeth of Aboo Sa’eed Al-Khudree. Its chain of transmission was authenticated by Al-Haakim, and the hadeeth was classed as hasan by al-Nawawee in (Al-Arba’een An-Nawawiyyah) (32), and Ibn Rajab said in (Jaami` al-`Uloom wa al-Hikam) (2/210): “Some of its chains of transmission are strengthened by others,” and it was authenticated by Al-Albaanee in (Irwaa’ al-Ghaleel) (896).
Fourth rule: That there should be no extravagance in adorning oneself.
1. The Almighty said, “O sons of Adam, take your adornment at every mosque, and eat and drink, and do not be extravagant. Indeed, He does not like the extravagant.” (Al-A’raaf: 31)
2. On the authority of Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-‘Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), “Eat, give alms, and dress without extravagance or pride.” [447] Al-Bukhaaree narrated it in a mu’allaq form before the hadeeth (5783), and Al-Nasaa’i (2559), and the wording is his, Ibn Maajah (3605), and Ahmad (6695). Al-Mundhiree said in (Al-Targheeb wa Al-Tarheeb) (3/169): Its narrators to Amr are trustworthy who can be used as evidence in Saheeh. It was classed as hasan by Ibn Hajar in (Amali Al-Mutlaqah) (32), and it was authenticated by Al-Haytamee Al-Makkee in (Al-Zawaajir) (2/35), and Al-Sana`aanee in (Subul Al-Salaam) (4/272).
Fifth rule: That it is not a changer of Allah’s creation. [448] Al-Qurtubee said within the forbidden change: “This prohibition is only in what is permanent, because it comes under the heading of changing the creation of Allah Almighty, so as for what is not permanent - such as kohl and adornment with it for women - the scholars have permitted that.” (Tafseer al-Qurtubee) (5/393). And Ibn Uthaymeen said: “If this change is permanent, then it is forbidden, rather it is a major sin, because it is more severe in changing the creation of Allah Almighty than tattooing... But if the change is not permanent, such as henna and the like, then there is nothing wrong with it, because it wears off, so it is like eyeliner and applying red make up on the cheeks and lips.” (Majmoo’ Fataawaa wa Rasaail Al-Uthaymeen) (17/20).
1. Allah Almighty said a story about Satan, may Allah curse him, “I will certainly mislead them and delude them with empty hopes. Also, I will order them, and they will slit the ears of cattle and alter Allah’s creation.”
2. On the authority of Abdullah bin Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates stating, “May Allah curse the women who do tattoos, the ones who have tattoos done, the ones who pluck out hair and get it plucked, and the ones who get their teeth separated for beauty, [449] Al-Mutafallijaat: pl. of mutafallijah, it is she who creates a gap between the two front teeth using a file and the like. For beauty, i.e., for the purpose of beautification. See: (Fath al-Baaree) by Ibn Hajar (10/372). the ones who change the creation of Allah Almighty, why should I not curse the one whom the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) cursed! And it is in the Book of Allah, “Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it.”” (Al-Hashr: 7) [450]
Sixth rule: That there be no deceit or fraud.
1. On the authority of Aboo Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever deceives us is not one of us.” [451] Narrated by Muslim (101).
2. Sa’eed bin Al-Musayyib narrates stating, “When Mu’aawiyah bin Aboo Sufyaan came to Madeenah, he delivered a sermon to us. He took out a tuft [452] Kubbah: it means qussah, meaning, a collection of hair. See (Mihatul Baaree bi Sharh Saheeh al-Bukhaaree) by Zakariyaa al-Ansaaaree (6/567). of hair and said, "I never thought that someone other than the Jews would do such a thing (i.e., use false hair). The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) named such a practice, 'Az-Zoor' (i.e., falsehood).” [453] It was narrated by Al-Bukhaaree (3488), and Muslim (2127) and the wording is his.
The relevance:
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) called hair extensions as falsehood, and falsehood: lying and decorating with falsehood. There is no doubt that hair extension of part of it, [454] (‘Umdatul Al-Qaaree) by Al-‘Ainee (16/65) (22/63). hence, it has been prohibited. Because of the cheating and deceit found in it. [455] (Kashf al-Mushkil min hadeeth al-Saheehayn) by Ibn al-Jawzi (4/371).
Seventh rule: Not to adorn yourself with something forbidden.
Such as men adorn themselves with gold and other things, the details of which will come later, Allah willing.
