Overall meaning : Believers! Do not take My enemies and yours for supporters and trusted allies, showing them love and affection when they have rejected the truth that has come to you and have already driven Allah’s Messenger and yourselves out of your homes merely because you believe in Allah, your Lord. If you have emigrated and left your homes to strive in My cause and to seek My good pleasure, then do not take them for supporters and trusted allies.
You show them love and affection by offering them advice in secret, when I know very well all that you conceal and all that you reveal! Whoever of you does this has truly strayed from the right path
If they gain the upper hand over you, they will openly show their enmity towards you and stretch out their hands and tongues to you with evil. They already wish you would disbelieve in your Lord.
Do not let your relatives and children make you disobey Allah for their sake, for they will not avail you on the Day of Resurrection, on which Allah will decide between you and them—admitting the believers into Paradise and casting the unbelievers and the disobedient into Hell. Allah sees all your actions.
