Overall meaning : Allah Almighty mentions in these verses what happened when Mary went back along with her newborn son to her people: Then she returned to her people bearing her newborn child. ‘Mary!’ they said when they saw her carrying the child in her arms, ‘You have done a monstrous thing!’ Sister of the righteous man, Aaron! Your father was not an adulterous man, nor was your mother a loose woman! She made a sign to them, pointing to the child and gesturing for them to ask him. ‘How can we possibly speak to a baby in the cradle,’ they disapprovingly asked, ‘when he is not old enough to talk?’ Jesus miraculously spoke, saying, ‘I am the servant of Allah. He has already decreed He will give me the Gospel and make me a prophet. He has made me blessed and a means of His blessings for people wherever I may be, and He has enjoined me to establish regular prayer and pay zakat as long as I live, and has made me kind and dutiful to my mother and not arrogant, wretched or disobedient to my Lord. Allah’s peace was on me the day I was born, and it will be on me the day I die and the day I will be raised to life on Judgement Day.’
The Almighty then says, addressing His Messenger, Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: Such was Jesus son of Mary, and this is the full truth about which the Jews and the Christians doubt. It does not befit Allah Almighty to have offspring. Glorified and Highly Exalted is He above that! When He wills a thing to be, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is just as He wills it.
The Almighty also informs us that Jesus, peace be upon him, also said to his people when he was still in the cradle: Allah is my Lord and your Lord; therefore, worship Him alone and do not ascribe any partners to Him. This is a straight path. Whoever follows it will be rightly guided.
