Overall meaning : Almighty Allah mentions the unbelievers’ attitude when they hear Allah’s revelations recited and the flimsy arguments they use against the believers: When Our clear verses are recited to the people, the unbelievers say to the believers, ‘Which of us two has better homes and goods, a better living and position and has more prestigious gatherings in this life? How can we, then, be following falsehood and you following the truth when we are better than you in terms of material riches and privileges?
The Almighty responds to the false argument of these arrogant unbelievers, saying: Many unbelieving nations before the Quraysh unbelievers did We destroy, and they were far better who were far superior in respect of material riches and in splendour and outward show! Say to them, Muhammad, ‘For those who choose to stray from the truth and stubbornly refuse to follow it, Allah will, as punishment, give them respite, grant them long and prosperous lives and not hasten their punishment so they may persist in their unbelief and error until, when they see Allah’s warning being fulfilled—be it some worldly punishment or Judgement Day—only then will they realise who has the worst position and the weakest helpers and forces.’
Having thus shown the evil condition of those who obstinately choose to follow falsehood, Allah then sheds light on the condition of those who follow the truth and right guidance: As for those who follow Allah’s guidance and true religion, He will increase their faith and beneficial knowledge, and inspire them to do righteous deeds. The good words and deeds which will lead to eternal bliss and whose reward will never go to waste are far better with Allah in terms of reward and final outcome than all the fleeting worldly goods the unbelievers brag about.
