Al-Ma’aarij - سورة المعارج
Introduction of Sura


Names:
This surah is called Surat Al-Ma?arij. [430] See: Al-Fayruzabadi: Basa?ir Dhawi At-Tamyiz, 1/480; Tafsir Ibn ?Ashur, 29/152.

Makki or Madani?
Surat Al-Ma?arij is Makki; more than one of the commentators narrated that there was consensus regarding that. [431] Those who narrated that there was consensus regarding that include: Ibn ?Atiyyah, Ibn Al-Jawzi and Al-Qurtubi. Objectives:
The most important objectives of this surah include:

Reminding people of the Day of Resurrection and its hardships, and what will happen on that day of reckoning, requital, reward and punishment. [432] At-Tantawi: At-Tafsir Al-Wasit, 15/90.

Topics:
The most significant topics addressed in Surat Al-Ma?arij include:

1- The audacity of the disbeliever in seeking to hasten the punishment, and a warning to the disbelievers of punishment on the Day of Resurrection.
2- Affirmation that the Day of Resurrection is true and will indeed happen; description of some of its intense horrors.
3- Mention of Hell and what makes a person deserve its punishment; comparing that with the deeds of the believers, which will lead them to Paradise.
4- Rebuking the disbelievers and highlighting the humiliation they will face on the Day of Resurrection.
5- Reassuring the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and consoling him for what he faced from the polytheists.
