Overall meaning :
Two young men, Allah Almighty states, happened to go to prison at the same time as Joseph. One of them said, 'I dreamt that I was pressing grapes for wine.’ The other said, 'I dreamt that I was carrying bread on my head, from which birds were eating.’ 'Tell us,’ they said to Joseph, 'the interpretation of our dreams, for we see that you are of the good-doers; do us good, then, and tell us the meaning of our dreams.’
Joseph said to them, 'I can tell you the meaning of whatever food you are provided with in your dreams even before its interpretation comes to pass. The interpretation I will give you is part of what my Lord has taught me, for I have believed in Him and I devote my worship to Him alone. I have shunned the faith of a people who disbelieve in Allah and deny the resurrection and divine judgement in the life to come, and I follow the religion of my fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is not right for us to associate anything with Allah in worship. Such affirmation of Allah’s oneness, with which Allah has blessed us, is part of His grace upon us and people whom He has made us call to it, but most people do not give thanks.’
'Fellow prisoners,’ Joseph went on to say, 'which is better, worshipping different created gods that do neither harm nor good or worshipping Allah alone, the One God, who holds absolute power over all that exists? Those you worship instead of Allah are nothing but meaningless names you and your fathers have made up for them, because you are ignorant and misguided, and for which Allah has sent down no proof whatsoever authorizing their worship. All judgement rests with Allah alone. He has commanded you to worship none but Him. That is the right and true religion, but most people do not realise it.’
'Fellow prisoners,’ he said, 'here is now the meaning of your dreams: one of you will be discharged from prison and will serve wine to the king of Egypt. As for the other, he will be crucified and left for the birds to feed off his head. The matter about which you inquired has thus been decided, and my interpretation of your dreams will certainly come to pass.’
Joseph then said to the prisoner who he knew would survive, 'Mention me to your master the king when you are freed and inform him that I have been unjustly imprisoned.’ Satan, however, made that young man forget to mention Joseph’s case to the king, and so he stayed in prison a few more years.
