Overall meaning :
Is Allah not sufficient to protect His Servant Muhammad against all harm?! Yes, He is. Yet the idolaters amongst your people, Muhammad, threaten you with the false, helpless gods they worship besides Him! Whomever Allah leaves to stray from the path of truth will never find any guide, and whomever He guides to the truth none can lead astray. Is Allah not mighty and capable of inflicting retribution on the unbelievers and deniers of truth?!
If you ask the idolaters among your people, Muhammad, ‘Who has created the heavens and the earth?’ they will say, ‘Allah alone has.’ Say to them, ‘Consider, then, the idols that you call upon besides Allah: If Allah wished to afflict me, would your idols be able to relieve my affliction? Or if He wished to show me mercy, would they be able to withhold His mercy?’ Say, ‘Allah alone is sufficient for me. In Him alone should the faithful put their trust.’
Say to them, ‘My people, act and persist in your ways; I will act and persist in the way Allah has commanded me to follow. You will certainly come to know who will be seized by a punishment that will disgrace him in this life, and be smitten by a constant and everlasting torment in the life to come.’
Surely We have sent down to you, Muhammad, the Qur’an with the truth for the benefit of mankind; therefore, whoever follows the right path does so for his own benefit, but whoever chooses to stray from it will suffer the consequences of his own choice. You are not set over them to dispose of their affairs and coerce them into following the truth.
