Overall meaning : Say to the idolaters among your people, Muhammad, ‘I am not the first of Allah’s messengers: Many messengers did come before me. Being human, I do not know—unless Allah informs me—what will happen in the future in this world and therefore what will be done with me or you! I follow only what Allah has revealed to me, and my only duty is to warn you against Allah’s punishment.’
Say to them, ‘Tell me, if this Qur’an is truly sent down to me from Allah and yet you reject it, when a witness from among the Children of Israel has already testified to its being truly from Allah as it conforms with the earlier scriptures (in such matters as Allah’s oneness, resurrection and final judgement) and then he believes it while you arrogantly reject it, who could be, then, further astray from the truth than you? Allah certainly does not guide the wrongdoers.’
