Overall meaning : We have assigned the unbelievers— on account of their rejecting Allah and His clear signs and their stubbornly denying the truth—evil companions who have made the life of this world and its forbidden desires, as well as their denial of the resurrection and recompense, appealing to them. The sentence of punishment which was justly passed on the unbelieving communities of the jinn and people before them has also been their due. They will truly be losers.
The Quraysh unbelievers say, fearing the powerful influence of the Qur’an, ‘Do not listen to this Qur’an and oppose it; drown it out while it is recited by clapping, whistling, and engaging in frivolous noisy chatter, so that you may gain the upper hand over Muhammad and his followers!’
We will surely make the unbelievers suffer a severe punishment and repay them according to their worst deeds. Such will be the requital of Allah’s enemies: The Fire, which will be their eternal abode—a just requital for their unbelief and denied of Our signs.
The unbelievers will say, ‘Lord, show us those who have led us astray from among the jinn and humans. We will trample them under our feet to suffer the severest torment in the lowest depths of the Fire.’
