Overall meaning : Knowledge of the Day of Resurrection belongs to Him alone: He alone knows its exact time. No fruit emerges from its sheath, nor does any female conceive without His knowledge.
On Judgement Day, Allah will call out to the idolaters, ‘Where are now those alleged partners of Mine?’ ‘We proclaim to You, Lord,’ they will reply, ‘that none of us today can testify to that false claim!’ Whatever false gods the idolaters used to worship in the life of the world will, on that day, fail them and will be of no benefit whatsoever to them, and they will know for certain that there will be no escape for them from Allah’s punishment.
Man never tires of asking his Lord for good (such as health and wealth); but if evil (such as poverty and ill health) befalls him, he loses hope in his Lord’s mercy, sinking into utter despondency. Nevertheless, if We let him taste some of Our grace by bestowing some favour upon him after hardship has afflicted him, he is sure to say, out of sheer pride, ‘This is what I truly deserve, and I do not believe that the Day of Judgement will ever come; but even if it were to come and I were to be brought back to my Lord, He will certainly admit me into Paradise!’ We will, on Resurrection Day, inform such unbelievers of all the deeds they have done in this world, and We will surely make them taste a severe punishment.
When We confer a certain blessing on man, he conceitedly turns aside from Us, disdaining to worship his Lord and give thanks to Him, and he becomes too arrogant to submit to His will; but when evil befalls him, he insistently prays to Allah to relieve his affliction!
