Overall meaning :
Allah Almighty opens this noble surah with two letters of the Arabic alphabet, namely haa’ and meem, which prove the miraculous nature of the Qur’an. A brief discussion of these disconnected letters is to be found at the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah.
The Almighty then swears by the Clear Book—the Qur’an—which clarifies everything, to confirm the purpose of making this Qur’an in the form it is: We have made this book an Arabic Qur’an so that you may understand its meanings and ponder it. This Qur’an—which is in the Preserved Tablet with Us—is indeed sublime and full of wisdom, entertaining no ambiguities, inconsistencies or deviation from the truth.
Should we then hold back the Qur’an from you, idolaters, altogether and deprive you of its guidance simply because you are a people who transgress and are steeped in unbelief and sin?! By no means.
Many a prophet did We send forth to the past nations. Whenever a prophet came to them, they mocked him, and so We destroyed them even though they were mightier than the unbelievers among your people, Muhammad. We will likewise destroy them if they persist in their unbelief and mockery, and the example of those who suffered such utter destruction has been already set before them to avoid meeting the sa me dreadful fate.
