Overall meaning : This great surah opens with the ‘disconnected letters’, which have already been discussed at the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah. The Almighty then declares that He has revealed this Qur’an to His Messenger, Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to bring all mankind, by their Lord’s permission and help, out of the darkness of unbelief, ignorance and sin into the light of faith, knowledge and obedience to follow the clear and straight path that Allah has set for His servants and made it lead to the Almighty, worthy of all praise—Allah, to whom belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. Woe to the unbelievers because of a severe torment which they will suffer on the Day of Judgement. They are the ones who love the transient life of this world, preferring it to the permanent life to come, prevent people from following Allah’s religion, striving hard to make it appear crooked to suit their whims and desires. These have indeed strayed far from the truth.
