Overall meaning : This great surah opens with the ‘disconnected letters’, which have already been discussed at the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah. Allah Almighty then states that these noble verses are the verses of the Qur’an—the clear, miraculous book, which comprises all forms of perfection and shows the truth in the best and the clearest manner. The unbelievers will regret rejecting the true faith on the Day of Judgement and will desperately wish they had been Muslims and surrendered themselves to Allah in their life time. Let them, Muhammad, eat and enjoy the worldly pleasures, and let deluding and false hopes divert them from believing in Allah and obeying Him. They will know the evil end to which they will come when they realise they are losers and doomed to a painful and humiliating punishment. Never have We destroyed any community for their wrongdoing unless their appointed time for their destruction was reached, so that their destruction can neither be advanced beyond the appointed time, nor delayed.
