Overall meaning : Have the Quraysh unbelievers never journeyed through the land to see the ruined dwelling of those destroyed, so that they may reflect with their hearts and minds or listen to their stories and take heed? Indeed, it is their hearts, and not their eyes, that are blind to the truth. The Quraysh unbelievers challenge you, Muhammad, to hasten the punishment you threatened would strike them if they persist in their unbelief, but Allah will never fail to carry out the threatened punishment. It will certainly take place at the time He, in His infinite wisdom, determines. Indeed, a single day with Allah is like a thousand years in people’ reckoning in this world.
Numerous indeed were the towns whose people I had granted respite despite their having wronged themselves through their persistence in their unbelief, but then I seized them when they thought they would be spared the punishment. To Me will they all be returned on Judgement Day, and I will inflict on them the punishment they justly deserve.
