Overall meaning : This surah begins with some of the ‘disconnected letters’, which have already been discussed at the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah. The Almighty then says: These great verses are the verses of the Clear Qur’an.
We recount to you, Muhammad, in this Qur’an part of the story of Moses and Pharaoh, setting forth the truth for people who believe. Pharaoh made himself an arrogant tyrant in the land and divided its people into castes, enslaving, humiliating and oppressing one group of them—the Children of Israel—by slaughtering their sons and sparing only their daughters. Surely, he was an evildoer.
But it was Our will to bestow Our favour upon the Children of Israel who were oppressed in the land by destroying their enemy, making them exemplary leaders, making them the heirs of the wealth of Pharaoh and his people after their destruction and giving them power in the land; and to show Pharaoh, Haman and their forces the destruction of their kingdom at the hands of the Israelites, which they dreaded very much.
