Overall meaning : Allah Almighty tells His Prophet, Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, of the time when He made a solemn covenant with the People of the Book, whereby they pledged themselves to make the whole truth in their books clear to the people and not to hide it, but they violated the terms of that covenant and did not honour it. One of the facts they concealed was Prophet Muhammad’s description in their books, all in exchange for paltry worldly despicable gains. Evil indeed was what they did and gained!
Allah then addresses His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, telling him never to think that those who exult in what they have done and love to be praised for what they have not done that they will escape Allah’s punishment, nor should they themselves entertain such thought. By no means will this happen. They will surely have a painful punishment!
