Overall meaning : Allah instructs His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to say to those who claim they love Allah Almighty: A sure sign for your sincere love for Allah is to follow me. Thus, if you truly love Almighty Allah, then you must believe what I have brought you, do what I command, avoid what I forbid and follow my example, for love of Allah goes hand in hand with following in my footsteps. If you do, this will prove beyond doubt your sincere love for Allah and you will receive reward in kind: He will love you and, on top of that, He will forgive you your sins; for He forgives His servants’ sins and is compassionate towards them.
After that, Almighty Allah instructs His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to exhort them to obey Allah and His Messenger by doing what they both command and avoid what they forbid, and to tell them that if they pay no heed and arrogantly refuse to submit to the command of Allah and His Messenger, they will fall into unbelief and invite Allah’s wrath and thus subject themselves to His hatred. It naturally follows from this that Allah does not love, but rather hates, the unbelievers.
