Overall meaning : Allah tells His Prophet, Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that it is only by His grace that He has made him so gracious and tender-hearted towards his companions as to deal so gently with them, and that had he been harsh and hard-hearted, they would surely have deserted him, urging him to pardon their faults, pray for forgiveness for them, and to consult them about matters requiring joint consultation. If, after the consultation, he determines the best course of action, he should go ahead and take it, placing his trust in Allah, for Allah Almighty loves those who put their trust in Him.
The Almighty next points out to the believers that if He helps them and gives them victory, no one can possibly overcome them and prevail over them; on the other hand, if He forsakes them, no one will ever be able to help and support them, stating that it is in Him alone that every believer should put his trust.
Then He stresses that embezzling part of the war booty, or deception and treachery in general, for that matter, is by no means characteristic of the nature of prophets, who should never be accused of doing so, nor should anyone deceive them or accuse them of dishonesty. He also declares that anyone who embezzles part of the Muslims’ war spoils will bring along whatever he has misappropriated on the Day of Resurrection; then each person will be paid in full for what he has done, and no one will be wronged in the least.
