Ad-Dukhaan - سورة الدخان
Introduction of Sura


Names:
This surah is called Surat Ad-Dukhan. [288] See: Al-Fayruzabadi: Basa?ir Dhawi At-Tamyiz, 1/424; Tafsir Ibn ?Ashur, 25/275.

Virtues and characteristics:
It was narrated that Al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufrah said: Someone who heard the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) told me that he said: If you are attacked at night, let your watchword be Ha-Mim; they will not prevail.? [289] Narrated via Abu Dawud, 2597; At-Tirmidhi, 1682; Ahmad, 16615.

Makki or Madani?
Surat Ad-Dukhan is Makki, and it was narrated that there was consensus regarding that. [290] Those who narrated that there was consensus regarding that include Ibn ?Atiyyah, Ibn Al-Jawzi and Al-Qurtubi. See: Tafsir Ibn ?Atiyyah, 5/6; Tafsir Al-Jawzi, 4/87; Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, 16/125.

Objectives:
The most important objectives of Surat Ad-Dukhan include:

1- Affirming the oneness of Allah, may He be Glorified and Exalted, and affirming the resurrection. [291] See: Al-Fayruzabadi: Basa?ir Dhawi At-Tamyiz, 1/424; Tafsir Ibn ?Ashur, 25/276.
2- Affirming that the Quran came down from Allah, may He be Glorified and Exalted. [292] See: Tafsir Ibn ?Ashur, 25/320.

Topics:
The most significant topics addressed in Surat Ad-Dukhan include:

1- Praise for the Holy Quran and a reference to the beginning of its revelation.
2- Warning the polytheists of punishment, in requital for their persisting in turning away and doubting it.
3- Some aspects of the story of Pharaoh with Musa (peace be upon him).
4- The false views of the polytheists regarding the resurrection, and a response with evidence that refutes their arguments.
5- Description of the terrors of the Day of Resurrection; the bad outcome for the disbelievers and the good outcome for the believers.
