Overall meaning : Allah Almighty forbids man against associating partners with Him and warns each individual against the results this is bound to bring about: Do not set up and worship any other deity besides Allah, lest you find yourself disgraced and forsaken. Your Lord has commanded that you should not set up and worship none but Him, and show kindness to your parents. If either or both of them attain old age in your care, honour them and show them no sign of impatience, not even by saying to them words that express the slightest annoyance, nor snap at them or rebuke them; but address them respectfully by speaking gently to them. Behave humbly towards them, out of mercy and tender affection, and pray, ‘Lord, show mercy to them for having patiently cared for me and looked after me when I was small and helplessly weak.'
Your Lord, people, is fully aware of the good and evil in your hearts and whether you intend to be dutiful or disobedient to your parents. If you sincerely intend to be dutiful to them, mend your ways and turn to Him in repentance for having neglected any of their or others’ rights, He will forgive you your errors, for He is All-Forgiving and All-Merciful to those who constantly repent and turn to Him.
