Overall meaning : Have the Quraysh idolaters never journeyed through the land to see and reflect on the end of the unbelieving nations before them? They were far mightier than these idolaters and they left considerable marks of their power in the earth, yet Allah punished them for their sins, utterly destroying them, and they had no one to protect them from Allah.
That was because their messengers had come to them with clear proofs of Allah’s oneness and the truthfulness of His messengers, but they stubbornly persisted in their unbelief, and so Allah seized them with torment, completely destroying them. Surely Allah is All-Strong and severe in punishing those who disbelieve in Him and deny His messengers.
