Overall meaning : Do you ever wonder, Muhammad, how the idolaters among your people who dispute Allah’s signs are turned from the truth to falsehood? They are the ones who have denied the Qur’an and all the messages We sent through Our messengers. They will certainly come to know the dire consequences of their unbelief when shackles and chains are placed around their necks and are dragged through scalding water and then cast into the Fire to serve as its fuel and are set aflame!
Then they will be reproachfully asked, ‘Where are now the alleged gods you used to associate with Allah and worship them besides Him?’ ‘They have vanished away from us and we cannot see them,’ they will reply. ‘Or rather we did not worship anything at all besides Allah in the worldly life.’ Thus does Allah lead the unbelievers astray!
They will further be told, ‘This has befallen you because during your life on earth you took delight in falsehood and wickedness and you were so full of self-conceit. Enter now the gates of Hell to stay there for ever. Evil indeed is Hell as a dwelling place for the arrogant!’
