Overall meaning : The unbelievers’ hearts are lost in ignorance and are heedless of the Qur’an, and they have many other evil deeds besides their unbelief which they persistently continue to commit, until, when We visit Our punishment on the affluent among them who show ingratitude to Us, they will suddenly start crying out to Us for help.
‘Do not cry out for help now,’ they will be told ‘It will be of no avail, for there is no helper to protect you against Our punishment. Verses of the Qur’an were recited to you many a time, but you would arrogantly turn away from them, thinking yourselves secure for being the inhabitants of the Sacred House (the Ka’bah), and passed the nights reviling the Qur’an and telling all sorts of falsehoods about it.’
