Overall meaning : Have these idolaters not pondered over the Qur’an so that they may believe it and follow its teachings? Has anything come to them in it that did not come to their forefathers, which makes them deny it and turn away from it?! By no means! For their messenger has brought them the same message that is the same in essence as that brought be previous messengers. Or is it that they do not recognise their Messenger, Muhammad, as the Truthful and Trustworthy and therefore deny what he has brought?! Or do they persist in their unbelief due to their claim that he is a madman? He is by no means what they claim him to be, and all this is not the reason for their rejecting the faith and believing in Allah’s oneness! The real reason is that he has come to them with the proven truth, but most of them abhor the truth as it is at variance with their personal desires. Had the truth followed their desires, the heavens and the earth and all who dwell in them would have certainly been corrupted. We have given them the Qur’an which is bound to bring them glory and honour, but they have turned away from it!
Or have they rejected the truth because you, Muhammad, are seeking a recompense from them for conveying it to them? By no means! The reward Allah has in store for you for conveying His message is far better for you and much greater than the recompense of these powerless people who constantly depend on Allah’s gifts and favours. He is the Best of Providers.
