Overall meaning : You are surely calling them and others, Muhammad, to a straight path—to Islam, which is the true religion; but these and their likes who do not believe in the life to come have indeed deviated from this right path and chosen others.
Even if We showed them mercy and removed their distress, they would persist in their insolent ways, wandering blindly and not being able to distinguish truth from falsehood.
We have already seized them with torment in this world—by afflicting them with such things as diseases and poverty—but they neither humble themselves before their Lord, nor do they sincerely entreat Him to remove the afflictions that have struck them. Rather, they persist in their denial and stubbornness until, when We open before them a gate of severe torment, they will at once regret their unbelief and rejection of the truth and will despair of salvation!
