Overall meaning : The Almighty says: Just as Allah has not placed two hearts within in any person’s body, so, too, He does not make your wives whom you declare to be as unlawful to you as your mothers truly your own mothers, simply by saying to one of them, ‘You are to me like my mother’s back’, nor does He regard your adopted children as your own children. These are mere false words which you utter with your mouths, but Allah speaks the truth and guides His servants to the right path.
Call your adopted sons by their real fathers’ names; doing so is only fair and more just in the sight of Allah. If you do not know their fathers, regard them as your fellow believers and close associates. However, you will incur no sin if you make a mistake in this matter, unless you do so intentionally. Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.
Prophet Muhammad has a greater claim on the believers than they have on themselves in terms of love and obedience, and his wives are their mothers in terms of respect and honour insofar as the believers are forbidden to marry them after his death. Allah ordains that blood relatives have a greater claim on one another and are more entitled to inherit from one another than the residents of Madinah (the Ansaar) and those who have migrated there for Allah’s sake (the Muhaajiroon), unless you wish to show kindness to your close associates and bequeath some of your property to them. This is all written in the Preserved Tablet (the Book of Decrees).
