Overall meaning : Almighty Allah says: Allah is indeed aware of the hypocrites among you who dissuade people from fighting in His cause and say to their fellow hypocrites, ‘Join us and leave fighting in Allah’s way,’ who themselves hardly ever go into battle and do so only to be seen and praised by people, being ever reluctant to assist the believers, with their wealth and lives.
Then when the battle begins and fear strikes, you see the hypocrites, Muhammad, looking at you, their eyes rolling, out of sheer terror, like someone in his death throes; but once their fear has passed and they feel they are out of danger, they assail you with sharp tongues, begrudge the believers all that is good and of benefit to them and covetously demand the best part of the spoils. Such hypocrites have no faith, and so Allah has left their deeds unrewarded. That is easy for Allah.
They were so terrified that they thought the Confederates were still surrounding the city and that they would never retire. Indeed, if the Confederates should come again, they would wish they were in the desert among the Bedouins, asking for news about you, Muslims, from a safe distance. Even if they were with you, they would take very little part in the fighting, and only to be seen and praised by people.
