Overall meaning :
Allah Almighty says: Prophet, We have made lawful for you your wives to whom you have given their dowries, as well as those whom Allah has placed in your possession from the unbelievers as captives of war; the daughters of your paternal and maternal uncles and of your paternal and maternal aunts who migrated with you from Makkah to Madinah; and any believing woman who offers herself freely to you to marry her without a dowry and whom you wish to marry. This latter being but a privilege for you alone, being granted to no other believer.
We have already decreed and made known the marriage duties We have imposed on the believers concerning their wives and those who have fallen into their possession from the unbelievers as captives of war. This exceptional privilege for you is in order that no blame will attach to you. Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.
You may put off spending the night with whomever you please of your wives, whom We have made lawful for you, and spend the night with any of them you please. You will incur no sin if you wish to spend the night with any of them whose turn for intimacy you have delayed. We have made this ruling of exempting you, Muhammad, from having to split your nights equally between your wives, as this makes it more likely they will be comforted and not be grieved when their turn is delayed, and all of them will be pleased and content with what you give them, for they know that this is Allah’s ruling and that you only act according to His commands. Allah knows what is in your hearts. Surely Allah is All-Knowing—He is fully aware of His servants’ intentions and actions; All-Clement—He does not hasten to punish them for their sins.
It is unlawful for you, Muhammad, to take more wives after this or to divorce any of your present wives to replace them with other women even if their beauty might be pleasing to you, unless they are amongst those whom Allah has placed in your possession from the unbelievers as captives of war. Allah is watchful over all things.
