Overall meaning : The Almighty says: Wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women in terms of virtue and honour if you do what Allah commands and avoid what He forbids. Therefore, do not be overly soft-spoken when addressing strange men, lest the lecherous-hearted should be moved with desire. Speak in an appropriate and dignified manner.
Stay in your homes unless there is a need; if you do go out for a need, do not flaunt your charms and display your finery as women used to do in the days of ignorance before the advent of Islam. Regularly attend to your prayers, pay the prescribed charity (zakat) and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah desires to remove from you all impurity and loathsome manners and deeds, Members of the Prophet’s Household, and to purify you completely.
Remember and recite, Wives of the Prophet, the verses of the Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunnah that are recited in your homes. Allah is All-Gracious, All-Knowing.
