Overall meaning : Another great sign for them of Our oneness and power to bring the dead back to life is the night. We strip the daylight from it, and there they are plunged in darkness. They also have a sign in the sun: It runs its set course to its appointed resting place that is laid down by the will of the All-Mighty, the All-knowing.
Another sign for them is the moon: We have ordained phases for it, so that it is born a thin crescent that starts increasing in width every night until it becomes a full moon, then it begins to decrease until it finally appears like an old date stalk. The operation of all these signs is governed by the laws Allah has set up for them. The sun is not to overtake the moon, nor does the night outpace the day; and each them—the sun, the moon and the other planets—moves in its own orbit and operates according to a perfect system in this universe!
