Overall meaning : When these idolaters are told, ‘Beware of suffering the same fate that befell the past unbelieving nations and beware of Allah’s punishment if you persist in your unbelief until death, so that you may be shown mercy,’ they pay no heed. Whenever a sign testifying to Allah’s oneness and power and bearing witness to Prophet Muhammad’s truthfulness comes to them, they turn away from it.
And when they are told, ‘Give to others out of what Allah has given you,’ they derisively say to the believers, ‘Why should we feed those whom Allah can feed if He chooses? You must be in manifest error for asking us to do so!’
