Overall meaning : Allah will command His angels on the Day of Resurrection thus: Gather together the wrongdoers and their likes, together with what they used to worship besides Allah, and lead them onto the way of Hell, but first detain them, for they will be questioned. They will be asked by way of reproach, ‘How is it now that you are not helping each other as you used to in the worldly life?!’ In fact, on that day they will be in utter submission to Allah’s command.
They will turn upon one another and engage in mutual reproaches. The followers will say to the leaders, ‘It was you who led us astray in the worldly life, for you used to make falsehood seem fair to us and swear that you followed the truth, and so we believed you and followed you.’
The leaders will reply, saying, ‘No, you yourselves were not believers in the first place for us to make you renounce your faith. Besides, we had no power at all over you. Rather, you were misguided evildoers who transgressed against the truth! So both you and we have become deserving of the sentence of punishment Allah has justly pronounced against us because of our unbelief. Now all of us will have to taste the punishment of the Fire. We seduced you by calling you to join us in our error, and you willingly followed us; we ourselves were lost in error.’
On that day, both the leaders of unbelief and their followers will share in the punishment. Thus will We deal with the wrongdoers.
