Overall meaning : Among those who followed Noah’s way was Abraham. He turned to his Lord with a sound, pure heart, declaring Allah’s oneness fully. He disapprovingly asked his father and his people, ‘What is this that you worship instead of Allah? Would you worship false deities instead of Allah, who alone is worthy of worship?! What, then, do you think your Creator and Sustainer, the Lord of all the worlds, will do with you if you persist in doing so?’
Abraham cast a glance at the stars to delude them into thinking that he shared their superstitious belief in the effect of stars on human life, and said, ‘I will get sick!’ He made this his excuse for being absent from their festival to which they had invited him, so they turned away from him and left. Abraham hastily made his way to their idols and sarcastically asked them, ‘Will you not eat of the offerings placed before you? Why do you not speak?!’
Then he fell upon them, striking them down with his right hand and destroyed them. His people came to him hurriedly upon their return when they saw that their idols had been demolished. ‘How can you worship what you yourselves have carved,’ he said, ‘when it was Allah who created you and all that you have made?!’ Abraham’s people said to one another, ‘Build him a tall structure, kindle a mighty fire in it and cast him into it as punishment for what he has done to your gods.’ They devised an evil scheme to burn him to death, but We abased them all and delivered him.
