Overall meaning : Is such bliss in Paradise a better welcome or the Tree of Az-Zaqqum that has been prepared for the dwellers of Hell? We made it a test for the wrongdoers (When the Quraysh pagans heard its name, they mockingly said, ‘How could a tree grow in Hell without being burnt?’). It is a tree that grows in the very heart of the Fire. Its fruits are so ugly they look like devils’ heads. These idolaters will surely eat from it and fill their bellies with it. On top of that, they will have a drink mixed with intensely boiling water. Then to the burning Fire will they be sent back. They found their fathers astray, yet they blindly rushed to follow in their footsteps!
Most of the past nations before the Quraysh idolaters strayed from the truth. Although We had sent them messengers to warn them of Our punishment, they persisted in their unbelief. See, then, the terrible end of those who had been warned. Not so, however, the true and devoted servants of Allah: they were saved from punishment.
