Overall meaning : The dwellers of Paradise will turn to one another, asking each other about their past lives. One of them will say, ‘I had a friend in the life of the world who denied the resurrection. He used to say to me, ‘Do you really believe that after we have died and turned to dust and bones, we will be raised to life and judged for our deeds?!’
This believer will then say to his companions in Paradise, ‘Would you like to look and see what has happened to him?’ He will look down and see his friend in the very midst of Hell. ‘By Allah,’ the believer will say, ‘you almost brought me to ruin in your attempt to seduce me. Had it not been for the grace of my Lord who guided me to the truth, I would have surely been among those delivered up and cast into Hell along with you.’
Then, turning to his companions in Paradise, he will joyously say, ‘Can you imagine that we will never die beyond our previous death in the life of the world and that we are not going to be punished in Hellfire? Truly this is the ultimate success. It is for such eternal bliss that everyone should do good deeds in this life to attain it!
