Overall meaning : Addressing the believers, Allah says: Will you not fight the idolaters who have violated the treaty you have made with them and have determined to drive Allah’s Messenger, Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, out of Makkah, and they are the ones who initiated hostilities against you and breached the peace treaty between you and them by attacking your allies, the tribe of Khuza’ah? Do you fear them? Allah has greater right to be feared if you are true believers.
Fight them, O believers. Allah will chastise them at your hands, degrade them and help you against them, and He will soothe the pain the believers find in their hearts and remove rage from them. Allah guides whomsoever He wills of them to turn to Him in repentance. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Do you suppose, O Muslims, that Allah will leave you without testing you with fighting in His cause, thereby recognising those who sincerely fight in His cause and do not take evil confidants from among the unbelievers, to the exclusion of Allah, His Messenger and the believers, supporting them and divulging the believers’ secrets to them? Allah is well aware of your actions.
