Overall meaning : Allah Almighty states that the Jews say, ‘Ezra is the son of Allah,’ while the Christians say, ‘Jesus Christ, son of Mary, is the son of Allah.’ That is what they say with their mouths, imitating the assertions made by the unbelievers from the nations before them. Allah has excluded them from His mercy. How can they stray from the truth and embrace falsehood?
They have taken their scholars and monks as masters besides Allah who made for them the lawful unlawful and the unlawful lawful and so they obeyed them in this. Similarly, the Christians have taken the Messiah, Jesus Christ, son of Mary, a god besides Allah. This is despite the fact that they are commanded to worship only One God, namely Allah. There is no god but He. Far exalted be He above those to whom they ascribe divinity!
